Session Description
This session builds critical communication skills required for effective leadership, with a focus on navigating difficult conversations. Participants will strengthen active listening, deliver clear and constructive feedback, and adapt communication styles across diverse teams. Emphasis is placed on maintaining trust while addressing performance, conflict, and alignment challenges.

Chris Esparza
Co-Founder and Principal

Chris is the co-founder and principal of CO Create Consulting, LLC.
He is a leadership educator and facilitator who helps individuals, teams, and organizations learn tools to help them respond creatively to new situations. With 20+ years of experience spanning psychology, higher education, leadership development, and organizational training, Chris brings a unique blend of adult learning, leadership theory, inclusive practice, and improvisation to this work.
Prior to launching CO Create Consulting LLC, Chris spent 3 years as VP for Leadership & Culture at Koppett, a business consulting and training group,10 years working in university leadership development roles, and another 10 years working in university based counseling roles. In 2020, he received the University of Oregon’s award for Distinguished University Service and Leadership and in 2014 he received the UO Division of Student Life’s Excellence Medallion.
Chris holds a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He also completed doctoral-level coursework, training and practicum in counseling psychology at UC Santa Barbara, with specializations in working cross-culturally, supervision delivery, career development, and facilitation.
Chris has designed leadership curriculum and facilitated programs for organizations such as PwC, Meta, Owens Corning, Blizzard Games, and the United Nations Development Program. Some of this work was conducted through previous consulting affiliations. He has also worked with universities including Yale University, University of Southern California, Boston College, Baylor, and the Education City consortium in Doha, Qatar. In addition, Chris has presented at international
conferences in Prague, Geneva, Montreal, Brussels, and Oxford.
He began his improvisational mindset learning journey in 1992 with the Stanford Improvisors, receiving the group’s Founders’ Award in 1996. He served as Board Secretary for the international Applied Improvisation Network from 2021-2025. Chris is originally from Los Angeles, but now resides in New Orleans—a city that itself has emerged from and embraced an improvisational spirit.
Outside of work, running is one of Chris’s most unexpected hobbies, having completed 12 marathons and 2 ultra-marathons over the last 20 years. In fact, he ran one of those marathons in a full-body banana suit and another while pushing a large speaker in a baby stroller! Oh—and there’s also those summers he danced in parades down Disneyland’s Main Street. All that is to say, no matter the context, occasion, or race distance… Chris is constantly striving to co-create a world that plays well together—learning and growing in ways that incite shared laughter, curiosity, flow, synergy, and possibility.
